DESCRIPTION: Large ecotourism guest house built in local style with bush materials, and run by the village community. Lababia Village and the Kamiali Guest House are located inside the 47,000 hectare KAMIALI WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA (WMA). The WMA comprises a range of natural habitats including coastal, freshwater wetlands and rainforest. There is end-to-end scenery and wall-to-wall nature throughout the wildlife management area. Setting up the WMA instead of selling the forest to loggers has been a wise decision by the local people, and their lifestyle has benefited considerably - see newspaper article.
LOCATION: The guest house is situated in close proximity to Lababia Village, Salamaua District, 2 hours boat ride (60km) south of Lae. Boat transfers are arranged for guests and charged at approx AUD$37 per head return.
ROOMS: Dormitory-style accommodation in 3 cosy bunkhouses which sleep up to 8 people each. Bedding, linen, soap and mosquito nets are provided. There is also a communal loft area in the main building which can be used as a sleeping area.
BATHROOMS: Private showers and flush toilets are located in a communal amenities block. Water is piped from mountain springs.
MEALS: Meals are prepared at the guest house by trained villagers who use a combination of traditional and modern methods of cooking. Much of the food served at the guest house is local produce including seafood, seasonal fruits and garden vegetables. Drinking water is piped from a pristine mountain spring and is safe to drink.
GUEST FACILITIES: There is a meeting room used by groups which come to have their conferences at Kamiali at certain times of the year. The guest house uses both solar and generator power to provide lighting. There is no phone but a HF radio link to the centre's office in Lae can be used to pass messages to the outside world.

ACTIVITIES AND TOURS: Snorkelling, hiking, canoeing, strolling on the beach, birdwatching, rainforest walks. The Lababia village people offer a range of very good ecotours centred on the Wildlife Management Area which are informative and most enjoyable. The village people have been trained in tour guiding and do an excellent job. Click here for a description of ecotours available at Kamiali Guest House. There is an extra charge for tours (around AUD$20 average), but don't skimp: they are really worth it and the money goes towards community development.
OTHER INFORMATION: Kamiali Training Centre and Guest House is a cooperative venture between a non-government organisation, the Village Development Trust, and the people of Lababia Village. Apart from accommodating ecotourists, the guest house is used as a venue for training local people in ecoforestry, ecotourism and nature conservation.
APPROXIMATE RATE: AUD$46 per person per night including meals.
BOOKING ARRANGEMENTS: Pre-bookings only.
