OUR BRIEFING

Morobe can be divided into two zones: Lae and “the rest of the province”.
Lae is a hot, dusty industrial city which doesn’t hold much interest for tourists.
The town isn’t particularly safe. Being connected to all the Highlands provinces by road, Lae is the last stop for the hopeful and the desperate, with large squatter settlements full of unemployed people that seem to spill on to the city streets looking to annoy everyone else. If you are dull enough to wander around the central shopping area looking lost (or, worse, looking like a tourist!) you can expect to be followed around by scammers with lines like “Remember me? I’m happy to see you again. Can you spare me ten bucks?”.

Outside Lae, Morobe is a big and beautiful province with lots to offer. Great beaches, pretty little offshore islands, close-up wildlife and spectacular mountain scenery.
