the major attraction at Barem is the guided overnight hike up to
the Mt Masur lookout. The hike commences at Karangkawir butterfly
ranch and ascends gradually to the Konembing camp site on Mt Masur
for overnight in a hiker's hut. Hikers descend the following day
via the Sibor river valley to Ksarman village near the north coast
highway and jump on a PMV to return to Barem. This walk takes in
some spectacular scenery, especially at the Mt Masur lookout, and
passes through the thermal boundary between the coastal and inland
climates - a sudden temperature drop (from "hot" to "warm"
!) at Miramir village. Campfire cooking etc is organised by your
village guides who will accompany you and show you the secrets of
the forest and introduce you to village people you will meet along
the way. (NB The peak of Mt Masur is a sacred site and visitors
are not permitted at the summit).
You
will see a variety of bird and animal life along the way, probably
including the bird of paradise in its natural habitat and the Pitohuis
bird with its poisonous toxin.

villages and gardens, bamboo flute music, and drinking kava.
